{"id":12909,"date":"2025-06-12T13:53:59","date_gmt":"2025-06-12T13:53:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cac-cl.pt\/?p=12909"},"modified":"2025-07-18T10:30:06","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T10:30:06","slug":"cac-cl-activity-report-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cac-cl.pt\/pt\/cac-cl-activity-report-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Cat\u00f3lica Luz Clinical Academic Centre Activity Overview \u2013 2024 in Numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Cat\u00f3lica Luz Academic Clinical Centre (CAC-CL) has reached a defining milestone in its journey!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember431\">As a result, as a joint initiative between Universidade Cat\u00f3lica Portuguesa and Luz Sa\u00fade, the CAC-CL solidified its position as a national benchmark in medical education, biomedical research, and translational innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember432\">This evolution clearly reflects our commitment to shaping the future of healthcare through knowledge, collaboration, and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><h4><strong>\ud83c\udf93 Academic Development: Shaping the Next Generation of Medical Professionals<\/strong><\/h4><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember434\">To begin with, <strong>the clinical rotation plans<\/strong> for 4th-year students were successfully aligned and have been ongoing since September 2024!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember435\">In alignment with emerging challenges in healthcare and cognitive science, the Cat\u00f3lica Luz Academic Clinical Centre support the launch of <strong>Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Cognitive Systems and Neurosciences<\/strong>, a pioneering programme that bridges biomedical sciences with technological innovation. This decision was based on the rising relevance of brain-related diseases and the opportunity to integrate health, technology, and data science in an emerging interdisciplinary field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember436\">In addition, CAC-CL helped launch two new Master\u2019s programmes starting in 2025: the <strong>Master in Medical Education<\/strong> and the <strong>Master in Immunology and Vaccinology<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember437\">Another significant development was the launch of <strong>CAC-CL\u2019s Executive Education Program<\/strong>, with four courses organized throughout 2024, totaling 138 hours of training, 31 expert lecturers (national and international), and 71 participants. These courses reflect CAC-CL\u2019s commitment to bridging education and practice across the healthcare innovation landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember438\">Taken together, this educational reform reflects CAC-CL\u2019s mission to provide lifelong, interdisciplinary training grounded in clinical reality and scientific advancement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><h4><strong>\ud83d\udd2c Biomedical Research and Innovation: Expanding Capacity and Global Presence<\/strong><\/h4><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember441\">Moreover, CAC-CL achieved significant progress in its scientific agenda by conducting <strong>20 active research projects<\/strong>, many of which were supported through competitive national (FCT, PRR) and international (Horizon Europe) funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember442\">A major highlight was the establishment of the <strong>Cat\u00f3lica Biobank<\/strong>, now integrated into the national <a href=\"http:\/\/biobanco.pt\/\">Biobanco.pt<\/a> network, with branches in Lisbon and Viseu. This infrastructure enhances translational research capabilities and facilitates the sharing of biological samples and clinical data for collaborative projects. Ongoing developments include a <strong>new artificial intelligence platform<\/strong>, designed to integrate clinical datasets to support advanced diagnostics, preventive strategies, and personalized treatment protocols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember444\">At the same time, CAC-CL continued to foster institucional alignment and research engagement by participating in the <strong>3rd Hospital da Luz Research Congress,<\/strong> which focused on strengthening collaboration between research and support teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember445\"><strong>\ud83d\udc65 Human Resources and Gender Equity: Investing in Talent and Diversity<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember446\">Notably, the universe of CAC-CL experienced a <strong>26% increase in its workforce<\/strong>, growing from 359 to 452 professionals in 2024. Notably, <strong>66% of the staff are women<\/strong>, reflecting a strong institutional commitment to gender equity and inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember447\">Even more impressive, we also <strong>surpassed the forecasted number of researchers<\/strong>, reaching 382 compared to the 363 initially projected \u2013 a <strong>growth of over 22%<\/strong> from 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember448\"><strong>\ud83e\ude7a Clinical Simulation and Experiential Learning: Empowering Competence Through Practice<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember449\">In line with this growth and with a focus on hands-on, experiential learning, the CAC-CL significantly expanded its use of <strong>clinical simulation<\/strong> in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember450\">Specifically, a total of <strong>388 training events<\/strong> were conducted, including <strong>111 simulation-based sessions<\/strong> at the SkillsLab, the practical training center of the Cat\u00f3lica Medical School dedicated to hands-on medical education. This growth supports our mission to promote experiential learning and clinical skills development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember451\"><strong>\ud83e\udd1d Institutional Partnerships and Visibility: Building a Collaborative Ecosystem<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember452\">As part of its integrative strategy, the CAC-CL continues to operate as an integrative hub for academic, clinical, and industrial stakeholders. In 2024, it maintained<strong> 97 active partnerships<\/strong> with universities, hospitals, research centers, and technology companies at both national and international levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember453\">Moreover, institutional visibility and internal coordination were also reinforced through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A plataforma <strong>appointment of an Executive Coordinator<\/strong> in March 2024;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The recruitment of a <strong>Communications and Marketing Assistant<\/strong> in March 2025;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The launch of a <strong>new communication and branding strategy<\/strong> to enhance the visibility of CAC-CL\u2019s initiatives across various platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember456\"><strong>\ud83d\udd2d Strategic Outlook for 2025: Advancing Health Innovation Through Knowledge and Collaboration<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember457\">Looking ahead, CAC-CL aims to deepen its role as a national and international reference in clinical research and innovation. The 2025 strategy focuses on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First and foremost, strengthening capacities across the academic-clinical ecosystem (students, researchers, educators, and healthcare professionals);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promoting <strong>joint initiatives with strategic partners<\/strong> to address shared challenges;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Attracting competitive funding<\/strong> and international scientific talent;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reinforcing the <strong>connection between scientific knowledge and patient-centered healthcare delivery<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember459\">As such, as a dynamic space for co-creation, CAC-CL reaffirms its long-term commitment to developing integrated, science-driven, and people-centered solutions to the health challenges of tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember460\">In 2025, CAC-CL also aim to play a more active role in strengthening communication and synergy between partners and pretends intensify efforts to create joint initiatives, increase visibility of partner achievements, and co-create solutions to shared challenges.
