Luís Teixeira has a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Universidade de Lisboa Medical School, which research was performed at EMBL, Heidelberg. Later he was a postdoctoral fellow at University of Cambridge, before starting a research group at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência.
Since 2022 that he is an Associate Professor at Católica Medical School, and leads a research group at Católica Biomedical Research Centre. The group focuses on host-microbe interactions using as model system the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, and its interaction with viruses, the intracellular bacteria Wolbachia, and the gut microbiota.
Luis Teixeira has coordinated a biannual International PhD School on Host-Microbe Symbioses since 2015, and the SymbNET European network in this field, from 2021 to 2024. In 2020, he was elected a member of EMBO as a recognition of his contributions to the life sciences.
