Coordinated by Mara de Sousa Freitas, with expert trainers from the Network for Education on Research Quality (NERQ), this training offered a unique opportunity to explore the ethical foundations of research, address grey areas in everyday practice, and engage with emerging topics such as artificial intelligence, open science, and reproducibility.
The opening session featured Peter Hanenberg (Director of the Católica Doctoral School), Pedro Mateus (Head of the Department of Medical Education at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Católica), Ana Rita Constante (Executive Director of the Católica Luz Clinical Academic Centre), and Mara de Sousa Freitas (Associate Professor at Católica Medical School and Director of the Bioethics Institute at Universidade Católica Portuguesa).
On the second day, the sessions included engaging discussions and hands-on learning on topics such as: Reproducibility with Michiel de Boer (online), Authorship and Publication Ethics with Mariette van den Hoven, Intersections of AI and Open Science – Ethical Considerations with Marie Alavi (online), Research Integrity in an International Context – Challenges and Opportunities with Mariette van den Hoven e a Julia Priess-Buchheit, Responsible Supervision with Rita Santos, and Ethical Dilemmas in Research (World Café style).
The final day of the course culminated in the closing conference “Responsible Science: Building a Culture of Integrity in Research,” held at the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon.
Over the course of these three days, we engaged in rich discussions, meaningful exchanges, and thoughtful reflection – an experience that deeply resonated and reinforced the importance of cultivating a research environment grounded in integrity and ethical responsibility.
