Professor Paulo Bettencourt, Assistant Professor at Católica Medical School and researcher at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Health (CIIS), has edited the book Tuberculosis Vaccines, published by the prestigious publisher Springer Nature.

The book is structured into five sections, which are progressively interconnected to provide a comprehensive overview of the current landscape and future directions in tuberculosis vaccine research.

These are:

Section 1 – Introduces tuberculosis and its etiological agent, Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Section 2 – Explores the historical development of the BCG vaccine and the evolution of new TB vaccine candidates.

Section 3 – Highlights advance in pre-clinical vaccines.

Section 4 – Reviews vaccines currently in clinical trials.

Section 5 – Examines key public health challenges and social issues related to TB vaccine development.

This book is a valuable resource for students, clinicians, and researchers in the fields of immunology, vaccinology, and mycobacteriology. It aims not only to provide up-to-date knowledge on the subject but also to inspire new progress in tuberculosis vaccine research.

Professor Paulo Bettencourt holds a degree in Biotechnology from ISHT, a PhD in Pharmacy from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Lisbon, and completed his postdoctoral research at the Jenner Institute, University of Oxford, where the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine and the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine were developed. During his studies, he discovered new antigens through immunopeptidomics and developed TB vaccine candidates that are currently being evaluated in pre-clinical studies.
