The 2024 National Survey on Scientific and Technological Potential (IPCTN) has highlighted the leading role of hospital institutions in Research and Development (R&D) in Portugal. According to the official report published by the Direção-Geral de Estatísticas da Educação e Ciência, Hospital da Luz Lisboa ranks as the fifth hospital institution nationwide with the highest investment in R&D.
Hospital da Luz Lisboa also remains the private healthcare group with the largest R&D investment in Portugal, consolidating its position as a national reference in clinical research and innovation.
Hospital da Luz Lisboa achieved 5th place in the overall national ranking, reaffirming its strong and sustained commitment to research. When expenditure is broken down by R&D area, the hospital stands out even further:
- 1st place in Health Sciences, with an investment of €3.9 million
- 4th place in Clinical Medicine, also with an investment of €3.9 million
These results confirm the hospital’s strategic focus on advancing scientific knowledge and translating research into improved healthcare outcomes.
Research and innovation are core strategic priorities of Luz Saúde, the owner of the Hospital da Luz network. These activities are developed through Hospital da Luz Learning Health, a structure dedicated to integrating clinical practice, data, and innovation.
Hospital da Luz is also part of the Portuguese National Test Beds Network, supporting the development and validation of innovative products from national start-ups and SMEs. In addition, it is a key partner of the Católica-Luz Clinical Academic Centre, in collaboration with the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and the União das Misericórdias Portuguesas.
