Nelson Frazão holds a degree in Biology and Genetics from the University of Lisbon and conducted his PhD research at the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica in Portugal and at The Rockefeller University in the United States. He later carried out postdoctoral work at the Radboud Institute for Health Sciences in the Netherlands, focusing on the virulence and epidemiology of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
In 2014, he shifted his research focus towards microbial evolution, joining the Evolutionary Biology group at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência to study the genetic evolution of Escherichia coli in the mammalian gut. Since October 2024, Nelson has been a Professor and Principal Investigator of the Microbiome Evolution Laboratory at Católica Medical School.
