International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed on December 3rd, raises awareness of rights, dignity, and inclusion. In this context, there is an essential figure who too often remains invisible: the informal caregiver. In this article, Vítor Veríssimo, family doctor and lecturer at the Católica Medical School, reflects on who provides care.

December 3rd is celebrated worldwide, and in Portugal in particular, as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This event has been observed since 1992 and was created by the United Nations to raise awareness and foster a greater understanding of disability, promoting the dignity, rights, and well-being of people with disabilities, resulting in more effective inclusion in political, social, economic, and cultural life.
